Funding for founders in Bremen, briefly explained

Bremen is one of the strongest locations for founder funding in Northern Germany. Through Starthaus Bremen, run by the Bremer Aufbau-Bank (BAB), the state subsidises professional start-up consulting by up to 80%, capped at €2,800. On top of that, nationwide, comes the BAFA programme “Unternehmerisches Know-how” (entrepreneurial know-how): up to 50%, max €1,750.

If you're starting out of unemployment, you can also apply for the Gründungszuschuss (start-up grant) from the Agentur für Arbeit and use AVGS start-up coaching: coaching that, once approved, is funded with no co-payment from you, and that I bill directly as an AZAV-certified provider. For innovative, technology- or knowledge-based ventures, there's the Starthaus programme BRUT (up to €8,500) and the EXIST start-up grant (Gründungsstipendium).

The order is what matters

The most common mistake: applying too late. Many funding programmes must be applied for before the consulting starts or before you form the company; otherwise you lose the entitlement. With the BAFA programme, even signing the contract can count as the start of consulting. This is exactly where I come in: I check your options, put the applications in the right order and prepare them with you. The decision to approve is always made by the relevant authority.

Common questions about start-up funding

What funding is available for founders in Bremen?

In Bremen, the state subsidises start-up consulting through Starthaus (BAB) by up to 80% (max €2,800). On top of that come the nationwide BAFA programme (up to 50%, max €1,750), the Gründungszuschuss (start-up grant) from the Agentur für Arbeit when you start out of unemployment, AVGS start-up coaching (no co-payment once approved), and, for innovative start-ups, the Starthaus programme BRUT and the EXIST grant.

Is start-up consulting in Bremen really eligible for funding?

Yes. Through the start-up consulting (Existenzgründungsberatung) at Starthaus Bremen, up to 80% of the consulting costs are eligible, capped at €2,800. What's decisive is the right order when applying, and I'll help you with that.

What's the difference between a grant and a loan?

A grant (e.g. Starthaus consulting funding, BAFA) doesn't have to be repaid. A funding loan (e.g. EFRE micro-loan, ERP-Bremer Förderkredit) is a low-interest loan that you pay back, ideal for investments.

Can I combine several funding programmes?

Often, yes. Consulting funding, AVGS coaching and a later Gründungszuschuss usually don't rule each other out. What matters is the order, and that the same service isn't funded twice. I'll put together the right roadmap with you.

Does the check guarantee funding?

No. The check gives you a first sense of which programmes broadly fit your situation. The amount and entitlement are always individual and subject to approval. In a free initial consultation, I'll review your specific case.

This assessment is for orientation only. It is not an entitlement and not legal or tax advice. Some funding is discretionary and must be applied for before the measure begins. All details as of 2025/2026 and without guarantee.

What funding is genuinely within reach for you?

Funding has deadlines and a fixed order. I'll clarify your entitlement and prepare the applications so they actually get approved.
